Jeremy-Blog: Tough Ladies #5 – The Many Roles of Claudia Black

Good day, everyone! Welcome to the fifth entry in Tough Ladies. Today, I want to focus on one of my favorite actresses, Claudia Black.

Claudia Black is an all-around Australian badass. Many of you are probably already familiar with her work even if you don’t immediately recognize her name; she’s a fairly accomplished actress/voice actress who tends toward fantasy and science fiction projects. For today, I want to take a brief look at a few of her more remarkable roles and offer them up as recommendations.

–        One of the roles Claudia Black is most famous for is Aeryn Sun in Farscape. Aeryn is one of several tough female characters in this property, and holds her own throughout dozens of conflicts over the course of the story. Seriously, at one point she gives birth while participating in a gun fight. Thankfully, Farscape is returning in some capacity, likely as another movie reminiscent of The Peacekeeper Wars.

–        After Farscape was canceled, Claudia Black and Ben Browder were shifted over to Sci-Fi’s (I refuse to use the new spelling at this point) other big property, Stargate SG-1, where Black played Vala Mal Doran. I have not watched much of the Stargate series, but mean to one day. From what I have seen, though, Black plays a great lovable thief-type character very much different from Aeryn Sun.

–        In 2009, Black voiced Morrigan in Bioware’s Dragon Age: Origins. Morrigan is one of the most interesting and integral characters in what is (I argue) one of the greatest fantasy video game franchises ever created. She returns in the third entry in the series, Dragon Age: Inquisition, slated for release this fall. I say a bit more about this game in a recent post over at Sourcerer.

–        In 2012, Black voiced Cheetah (a member of Wonder Woman’s rogues gallery) in Justice League: Doom. She pulls off a fairly convincing, sinister villain rather well. I hope to see her in more of DC’s animated projects.

As you can see, Claudia Black’s nerd culture cred runs deep. What are your thoughts on my choices above? What are your favorite appearances by Black in any media? Let me know in the comments below. Tweet me @quaintjeremy.

  1. Thank you for this post about an amazing actress! She is one of my favorite as well. After loving her in Farscape and Stargate SG-1, it’s because she voiced Morrigan that I went back to gaming through Dragon Age. Because of this, a lot of things happened in my life, including as a researcher and I sometimes joke that I owe this to Claudia’s talent!

      1. Yes! I’m very much looking forward to it! Not only do i badly want to play it, but following the game and that I’ve read the expanded novels from the franchise, I’ll be able to work on another paper about female characters in Dragon Age. 🙂
