Top Ten Tuesday: Blogging Confessions

top ten tuesday

Each week, The Broke and the Bookish hosts Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly book meme. This week we’ve shifted gears a bit, and we’re talking about blogging confessions. So here are 10 blogging confessions from me:

1. I cannot write without noise in the background. It’s generally the TV, but sometimes I listen to music as well. I just, in general, don’t like silence.

2. Sometimes I read something that I wrote ages ago and I think “did I write that?” And sometimes that’s a “wow, that was great” moment. Sometimes that’s an “oh no, that was awful moment.

3. Every day, I’m amazed at the way these blogs have grown since we started them approximately 8 months ago.

4. I stress about blog comments. If I can’t get to them quickly enough or if I don’t have much time to comment on other blogs, I get concerned.

5. There are things that I would like to blog about that I know that I never will.

6. My first blog was on LiveJournal, many years ago. I then used the blog feature on Myspace. Those accounts are long gone, but they were the seeds of what you see here.

7. Gene’O, my older sibling, cooked up the idea for a collaborative blog with a group of friends, and he brought me into the fold. He’d been planning off and on for a month or two, and we then planned for another month or two before I just started Part Time Monster one evening and then called him to stay I’d started up a blog.

8. Despite all the planning we did, I didn’t pre-write any entries. That’s probably the only thing I regret, in hindsight. It’s definitely advice I’d give to anyone about to start up a blog—-write 20 to 50 entries before you ever publish the first one.

9. I try to post daily, and I’ve managed to do so, with the help of my contributors, for most of the last several months.

10. I’m really, really glad that there’s spell-check software on WordPress.

  1. What?! There’s spell-check on WP??!! Where? When? How? I am constantly going into an online dictionary to verify spelling. It’s quite annoying. Why is WP not doing it for me??!!

  2. I get really antsy if I can’t comment on other blogs, I want to let everyone know how much I enjoy their posts, but sometimes there just isn’t time! 😀

    1. Yes, I agree! That’s one of the things that troubles me most—not having the proper time to go through and leave comments on others’ work.

  3. I stress about number four as well, Diana – feel really bad if I miss a comment, or fail to respond to a comment someone has made on my blog. I attribute this to thirty years of marking English and English Literature homework!!! xxx

    1. Why thank you! And yes, I have to write with something on—-I just hate the quiet. I’d say that’s due to being used to the noise of a dog and a small child, but I hated quiet even before they were here. 🙂

  4. Also, even though I know I shouldn’t I stress over comments, too. The reason I say I shouldn’t is that I don’t think anything at all about other bloggers taking a few days to answer a comment, or not commenting on my blog for a couple of weeks. I just figure they’re busy. I have to imagine most bloggers look at it that way.

  5. In addition to pre-writing, I should have been taking art photos from the moment I realized the project was going to fly. 250 pre-cropped original photos organized by subject would have been a very useful asset to have when we we starting out.

    1. I’ve found the further ahead I write something, the more chance there is of me psyching myself out, deciding it’s stupid, and never posting it. Been doing okay with scheduling them and then just letting them post without re-reading them, though.

      1. I do that a bit. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and go OMG! did those first posts go yet?

I almost never psych myself completely out of posting though. I usually just remove things and let them go.

        1. Well, I delete the swearing. 😉 For about a week last month every single thing I tried to write dwindled down into glum profanity about how everyone is wrong about everything. Refraining from posting those was a wise choice.

      2. I don’t tend to psych myself out about posts, but I do tend to just let the ones I’ve piled up publish without replenishing them, and then I have to work to get ahead again. lol

    1. 🙂 Top Ten Tuesday is a pretty good weekly meme. The Broke and the Bookish always have their list of topics up a month or two in advance, so if you’re into writing ahead for features, you can.

      1. I saw that! I’m not posting on Tuesdays as my regular day, but may end up doing with this what I’m thinking of doing with the “Celebrate the Small Things” Fridays, which is post weekly on my tumblr, and try to do at least one a month on my blog. 🙂 Looking forward to it!
