The Friday 56: #9

On Fridays, Freda’s Voice holds The Friday 56, a weekly booking meme. Essentially, you just grab a book, turn to page 56, post a sentence or a few sentences, and then join the link-up.

This week, I’ve been reading nonfiction: when I’ve had a chance. The last month and a half haven’t left me much reading time, but I’m crossing the threshold of “so much to do my head might explode” and getting down to a more reasonable “so much to do I think I’ll read a book instead.”

This week’s pick is Harold Blum’s American Lightning: Terror, Mystery, the Birth of Hollywood, and the Crime of the Century:

 He was flattered by the mayor’s personal appeal. He knew the entire nation would focus on this case. A success would add another dimension to his celebrity. A triumph would bring new clients to the Burns Detective Agency. He even already had a theory about who might be involved. But still he hesitated.
