The Weekend Coffee Share is a weekend link-up for posts that imagine the blogger is having coffee and a chat–usually starting with the phrase “if we were having coffee.”
I started writing these posts soon after Part-Time Monster launched as a way to talk about my family and home life while maintaining the Monster’s focus. I wish I knew who originated the idea of the “if we were having coffee” style blog post, but it seems to be a bit of a mystery. But the idea caught on, and soon other bloggers and friends were writing coffee posts. I started the link-up as a sort-of virtual coffee club in January of 2015.
Each Saturday, I post a “if we were having coffee” post of my own with a link-up that is open to current coffee posts. The coffee share has a Facebook and Twitter hashtag, #weekendcoffeeshare, which is in use through the weekend and sometimes into the week.
Below is a list of info I’ve put together based on responses and questions I tend to hear. If you have any other questions, you can of course leave a comment here or send an e-mail to email@example.com!
Q: Do I have to post on the weekend?
A: Of course not! I don’t want to tell you how to schedule your posts, and I think it would be restrictive to do so! The weekend coffee share is open to coffee posts that have been written during the week, too. If a Monday coffee post works best for you, for instance, then post on Monday, and feel free to add your link on Saturday or Sunday.
Q: When is the link-up open?
A: Each weekly link-up opens on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. U.S. CT and closes at 11:55 p.m. U.S. CT on Sunday.
Q: But what if I don’t drink coffee?
A: This one always makes me laugh a bit, because it’s such a reminder of how our computer and in-person lives are juxtaposed. But really, it doesn’t matter! You can pretend to like coffee. Or you can tell us that you don’t like coffee. I promise, we won’t hold it against you! Bloggers have framed their posts as conversations over cocktails, tea, and even just plain old water! The format is the thing—weekend coffee share posts imagine that the blogger is having a beverage with readers. This informal, loose format allows for a lot of freedom.
Q: I don’t really think I have enough to say every week, so can I just participate sometimes?
A: Each weekend starts a new link-up. Some bloggers choose to participate every week, while other bloggers find that they only want to participate occasionally. The coffee share is a come-and-go-as-you-please sort of community.
Q: Can I participate in the link up with more than one blog?
A: You can if your posts are different from one another.
Q: How do I add my link to the list?
A: Click on the blue Inlinkz button on that weekend’s coffee share post. Fill in the information and add your link!
Q: What’s the deal with that hashtag thing you guys keep talking about?
A: A hashtag is just a way of cataloging posts on some social media platforms; they’re very much like WordPress tags. Spending time browsing the #weekendcoffeeshare tag on Facebook, Twitter, and WordPress and including the #weekendcoffeeshare tag when sharing your own and others’ coffee posts are good ways to meet other bloggers and to boost the signal range of your post.
